Product detailed description

Description
The FN PS90 self-loading carbine with a 16" barrel length equipped with a slotted percussion cap is a civilian alternative to the legendary PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) submachine gun / weapon, the FN P90.

The PDW weapon category was defined in the early 1980s as part of the new NATO armament doctrine.
Extensive research has shown that the vast majority of members of the alliance's armies are still armed with unnecessarily powerful, large and heavy BR (Battle Rifle) weapons without needing them at all.
The vast majority of armed military personnel are operators of equipment and weapons systems, logistics and other support - for example, in the US armed forces, combat infantry only makes up about 10% of all armed personnel on the battlefield! Therefore, a requirement was defined for a completely new category of service weapons, the so-called personal defense weapon, which would fill the gap between pistols and submachine guns for pistol ammunition and standard assault rifles. The new category of weapons was rather defined by the new cartridge, as it had parameters that were really difficult to meet:

high penetration (the requirement was to penetrate 46 layers of Kevlar and a 1.6 mm titanium plate at 200 m or the so-called CRISAT test, i.e. to penetrate the then standard protective helmet)

high accuracy
energy loss after 200 m (reduction of the endangered area)

low weight
small dimensions
low recoil
possibility of use in both a long gun and a pistol
Although de facto no one has yet met the required parameters, certainly not completely, the given requirements resulted in a new cartridge from the Belgian arms and ammunition company Fabrique National de Herstal (FN): A 5.7 mm caliber cartridge in a 28 mm long cartridge case, chambered with an SS190 bullet, which is an analogue of the NATO standard SS109 bullet for the 5.56 x 45 mm cartridge.
Two PDW concept weapons were designed for this cartridge: the P90 submachine gun and the Five-seveN pistol. Especially when used together, this concept really makes sense, because the user has both a long weapon with a fully automatic function and an effective range of about 200 m and a powerful pistol with a high capacity capable of overcoming ballistic protection.
The FN P90 soon became an object of interest for many armies and other armed forces, although often the reason for interest was mainly its completely novel design.
The futuristic appearance of the weapon made it famous in many sci-fi films and TV series, especially in the famous Stargate.
Unfortunately, the PDW concept as such was never implemented, and armies still prefer to keep non-combat units armed with standard assault rifles, because it is simply easier logistically.
However, the P90 and Five-seveN soon came into the sights of police forces and especially various special forces and anti-terrorist units, especially due to the increasingly frequent use of ballistic protection by criminals.
Today, FN P90 rifles/submachine guns/PDWs are in service in more than 50 countries around the world and their popularity is not decreasing.
Their futuristic appearance is not their only advantage, it is mainly the unprecedented capacity of 50 rounds.
The rounds are stored crosswise in the magazine and are rotated 90° in two steps during feeding, as the magazine is stored in a bed on the upper side of the case lengthwise.
The overall dimensions of the weapon are therefore very compact despite the high capacity, which has made the P90 a very popular weapon for protection teams of high-ranking government officials or diplomats.
In the Czech Republic, FN P90s have been in service with the elite police Rapid Deployment Unit since the mid-1990s.
The commercially available, self-loading variant of the FN PS90 is distinguished at first glance by its long, 16" barrel.
Unfortunately, this is a tax on current American legislation. Otherwise - apart from the absence of a fully automatic function - its civilian variant is no different from the "military" P90 and shares a significant part of the components, including the magazines.
